Training my dog how to fetch?

I have a dog … I want to teach him how to fetch a ball but when I threw the ball all that he did Stayed and not even care … Then about a year he got the ball to go, but everything he does, it is to chew and are never again! If I try to take from him, he takes the ball in his mouth and runs away from me! So I just try to train him and he did the same thing for 4 years! Chewing the Ball! How do I make him learn how to pick one?
